-species closely resembles N. variabilis and is often difficult to distinguish (Hiltunen & Klemm 1980)

-occurs in littoral zones of lakes , in sand, muddy sand or sandy gravel and in clean to slightly polluted reaches of lowland rivers (Dumnicka 1978 in Davis 1982)
